Chancellorsville

The Battle of Chancellorsville took place in Virginia in 1863. It was a well- known
victory for the Confederates although it produced a mortal wound for General
Stonewall Jackson. William Cranston was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during
this battle.  He received the award for
his actions of May 2, 1863 as one of a party of four who risked his life to
retrieve a wounded Confederate officer from behind enemy lines while receiving
enemy gun fire.
